Collision Between Passenger Vehicle, Motorcycle Kills 9-Year-Old Boy

According to KOB 4, a tragic collision on I-25 near Los Lunas resulted in the death of a 9-year-old boy earlier this month. New Mexico State Police responded to the scene in the southbound lanes near milepost 201 shortly after 7 p.m.

Investigators determined that a passenger vehicle was speeding when it struck the back of a motorcycle. The force of impact caused the car to roll over several times.

A 9-year-old boy who had been riding in the car sustained fatal injuries, and responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle and the other passenger sustained moderate to severe injuries that required hospitalization.

Responders also transported the motorcycle rider to the hospital for treatment of what they believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The case remains under investigation, but police claim it does not appear that alcohol impairment played a role in the incident.

How Can You Reduce the Risk of a Motorcycle Crash?

Motorcycles do not provide any kind of protection in the event of an impact. As a result, riders should do everything in their power to avoid collisions. You can reduce the risk of a motorcycle wreck by:

  1. Purchasing an Appropriate Bike

Motorcycles can vary immensely in size, weight, and speed. Newer riders should stick to slower bikes until they hone their riding skills, and those who are on the shorter side need to consider seat height.

Upper body strength also plays a role in the size of bike that you should ultimately get. If you purchase a motorcycle that is too heavy for your frame, you will not be able to maneuver safely in traffic.

  1. Riding Defensively

Riders should never assume that the surrounding motorists have seen them, especially when they are about to turn or cross traffic. Always be prepared to make evasive maneuvers, and avoid traveling in vehicles’ blind spots.

  1. Staying Sober

Operating any kind of motor vehicle while impaired is incredibly dangerous, and this includes motorcycles. Never hop on your bike while angry, tired, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you do, the consequences could be catastrophic. Sadly, you can follow all of the tips above and still end up in a devastating crash with a reckless motorist. If you were hurt because someone else failed to follow the rules of the road, you may have a valid personal injury claim.
