Residents of a community in Albuquerque, NM have found speeding drivers to be a serious issue for them and after making several calls to City Councilor Cynthia Borrego, it seems their concerns are finally being addressed.

KOB 4 stated that neighbors who live near Golf Course and Irving in the Palmilla Senior Living Community have witnessed “problems with speeding near their entrance for a while.” Several community members decided to seek help in getting this problem resolved, especially after Marge Teague suffered permanent injuries because of a speeding driver. The news outlet says Teague was hosting a sorority meeting in the senior center when she sustained serious injuries in a car accident. Apparently, her driver was attempting to turn into the center but was hit by another motorist who had been coming down the hill at a fast rate of speed.

As a result of the crash, Teague had five broken ribs, suffered severe pains from the seatbelt, and is no longer able to use her right arm again. Her friend told the source that she was a right-handed person so as you can imagine, life probably became much more difficult for Teague when you can no longer rely on a limb you have grown accustomed to using.

With so many community members coming forward and accident reports filed that occurred near the senior center and the apartments located just across the street, Borrego decided to help the residents in need. Borrego decided to use money that had been set aside for her district to purchase a new speed limit and reduced speed sign that has been set up only a few feet from Palmilla Senior Living.

After the city provided a resolution to the problem, Municipal Development Director Pat Montoya said, “we were able to look at the needs and concerns raised by the residents here and were able to address them.” The city also stated that they are “on board to increase enforcement” if need be as residents said more action may need to be taken. The fact is, not all drivers abide by the speed limit signs that are posted which makes the roadway a much more dangerous place.

Did you know that in 2016, 10,111 people were killed in speeding-related accidents [Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)].  And while it is against the law to travel at rates of speed greater than what the speed limit sign indicates, it also endangers other motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists says the NHTSA. Some of the consequences of speeding include:

  • A greater chance you could lose control of your vehicle.
  • You reduce the “effectiveness of occupant protection equipment.”
  • You increase the chances of an accident being much more severe than if you were traveling at the legal speed limit.
