KRQE News 13 reports on a recent rollover crash that killed two adults and injured two children. According to authorities, the accident happened on Interstate 40 when the victims’ SUV changed lanes, collided with an 18-wheeler, and rolled several times.

The two adults who died in the wreck, Henry Lukee and Stacey Leon, were not wearing their seat belts. They were ejected from the vehicle. A 6-year-old and a 3-year-old were injured in the crash.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, police found beer cans inside the SUV.

Drunk-driving wrecks are far too common on New Mexico roads. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1,254 people in our state died in alcohol-related collisions between 2003 and 2012.

This statistic does not convey the tremendous emotional and financial hardship faced by accident victims and their families. If you were injured or lost a loved one in a collision with a drunk driver, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost income, non-economic damages, and punitive damages.

Read on to learn three alarming statistics about drunk driving in the United States:

  1. Nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities involve at least one drunk driver.

In 2014, alcohol contributed to approximately 31 percent of all accident fatalities in the United States. According to the CDC, alcohol also contributed to nearly 1 in 5 accidents that caused the death of a child aged 14 or younger.

  1. On average, one person is injured in a drunk-driving wreck every two minutes.

This statistic comes from data compiled by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and it means that every day, approximately 720 people are injured in drunk-driving crashes. That adds up to more than 262,000 injuries per year.

  1. Approximately .09 percent of the U.S. population admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol in 2013.

That might not sound like much, but it adds up to more than 28 million people. What’s more, a CDC survey conducted in 2012 estimated than 1.9 percent of U.S. adults had driven after consuming too much alcohol within the 30 days prior to the survey.

Most people know the dangers of driving under the influence, yet millions of motorists still make a habit out of drunk driving. If you were injured or lost a family member due to an intoxicated motorist, turn to The Law Office of Brian K. Branch, PC.
